Özet

There are enormous concerns about growth of human population in the world due to insufficient food supply based on the decline in agricultural areas and climate change. Quality seed with high yield potential plays an important role for the sufficient food supply in the world. The paper was therefore attempted to review the present status and recent advancement of seed market in Turkey and the world as well and to suggest future progress for seed and breeding sectors in Turkey. Seed and breeding sectors in Turkey have steadily been expanded since 1980 and Turkey has been risen the eleventh rank in the world with seed capacity of 750 million USD. Thanks to high quality seeds and seedlings, yields have considerably been increased in all kinds of agricultural crop plants in Turkey. Rate of hybrid seeds of maize, sunflower, sugar cane, canola and all kind of vegetables was approximately 100%. Seed production of maize, sunflower and cotton is mostly higher than that of domestic demand in Turkey. Scenario of export and import quantity of seeds for field and vegetable crops and flowers shows that Turkey is still foreign-dependent country. Seed and breeding sectors in Turkey show some promise with the recent advancement. Up to 2023, Turkey will be one of the important seed exporter countries with the recent financial supports.
