This
study presents a systematic review of studies on massive open online courses
(MOOCs) in the fields of learning English as a foreign language (EFL) or as a
second language (ESL) with a view to revealing their benefits and challenges.
Thus, to retrieve relevant studies, the researchers searched online databases
including Web of Science (WOS), ERIC, EBSCHOhost, ScienceDirect, SCOPUS, IGI
Global, Wiley Online Library, Emerald Insight, and Sage. Based on the
eligibility criteria, 44 studies (18 articles, 16 oral presentations, 7
projects, and 3 theses) were included in the study. Consistent with the
procedures suggested by Cooper, a systematic review was conducted. The results
reveal that massive open online courses in learning English as a foreign or
second language could bring some benefits for language learners such as
enhancing their language skills, providing them an incentive, and personalisation
of their learning. Besides, although known to have contributions like
flexibility and interaction to the process of language learners’ learning in
EFL/ESL, some challenges concerning language learners’ low participation level,
low proficiency level and peer assessment difficulty, along with pedagogical
challenges as technical difficulties, restricted licenses for courses, and need
for local language support are reported to be of crucial importance in the
review.
