Born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1936, Taner Baybars has been accepted as a twentieth century writer, translator and artist. His first poetry collection was published in 1954 titled as Mendilin Ucundakiler. This collection is the only work to be originally written in Turkish. After moving to Britain, he joined the British Royal Air Force in 1955. After his long military years, he participated to the British Council in London where he worked there until his retirement in 1988.
After his retirement, Baybars continued to publish his works in English including a novel and an autobiography. As he was fluent in English and Turkish, he translated many literary works including Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet. Baybars’ style is unique in that he managed to introduce contemporary Turkish literature to English speaking world. Even he wrote most of his works in Britain in English, Baybars has been included in Cyprus literature. In this study, Baybars’ novel is elaborated namely A Trap for the Burglar (1965) illustrating the modernization in his style. The first edition of this novel was published by a London company namely Owen Publishing. The story takes place in London and the main characters of the plot are nameless married couple. Interestingly, in the beginnings of the novel, the narrator refers to the main characters with the pronouns, he and she. Later in the novel, the narrator changes his mind and gives the couple names as Jane and John. The main conflict in the plot is that a burglar breaks into Jane and John’s house three times, but the valuables are not stolen.
